hold on to that feeeeeeeeeliiiiiiiiiiin'

So Rock of Ages was fantastic.*

Disclaimer: It should be noted that:
A) Anything with Don't Stop Believin' involved generally means I'll enjoy it.
B) I am absolutely the target audience this movie was made for. At least four of my favorite movies are movie musicals. (Newsies, Rent, Moulin Rouge, Across the Universe) and
C) I was already a fan of the stage production soooo.

Basically, it's a cliche predictable plot with mediocre acting and uneven vocal talent, buuuuuut it's also a mindless non-stop sing-along of great hits and funny dialogue.

The movie was slow to start off and I was totally uninterested in Julianne Hough's character because GIVE ME TOM CRUISE so yeah, there was that. Also her voice didn't really impress me in the slightest until at least halfway through the movie but goddaaaamn I would kill for her legs.

The other main character dude, Drew, was...eh. Basically I didn't really care for the 'main couple' (Cliche Coyote Ugly-type story and she didn't sound like she was from Oklahoma and his face just kind of bothered me though his voice was decent) until pretty much the scene before the credits, when Stacee Jaxx notices them singing for the first time and then it flashes forward to the two of them performing Don't Stop Believin' on stage with him. BIG FINISH WAS GOOD. (Also, Julianne's legs and Tom Cruise's body. Umph.)

BUT SERIOUSLY TOM CRUISE. I'd read reviews where people didn't think his voice was very good but I didn't really see that at all? Like, he didn't necessarily have THE ROCKER voice but he has a voice and oh lord does he have the personna to go with it. I really don't think anyone else could pull of Stacee Jaxx quite like Tom Cruise could. Also I literally could not stop staring at his fucking chest for pretty much every scene he was in. I'm not sure I've ever found him terribly attractive but GODDAMN. I was in lust from the moment he started singing Wanted: Dead or Alive to Malin Akerman (who in a shocking turn of events, can sing. And also has lovely legs. But still can't really act that great.) Frankly I just wanted a whole movie of Stacee Jaxx.

I MEAN COME ONNNNNNNNN.

Also of note is Catherine Zeta-Jones. Her performance of Hit Me With Your Best Shot in between church pews was something never knew I needed in my life. Also she's hilarious and I love her rocker get-up when she rejoins the audience at the end of the movie.

Um Um, the best part I think is Russell Brand and Alec Baldwin's broromance. THEY SING REO TO EACH OTHER AND THEN KISS oh man and Russell was actually really funny and Alec Baldwin was...kinda pretty much himself. Also I guess I knew that he sang but they actually sounded good together and augh. I just had a really good time watching this movie and it put me in a really good mood. I'd probably never pay money to see it again, but I'll buy it on DVD when it comes out just so I can watch the song performances again.

I KNOW. THE MAN DOES NOT AGE. I feel that we should all look into being Scientologist and crazy. (Note that I have not implied the two are mutually exclusive.)
