these are the voyages of the starship enterprise

To boldly go indeed. Excuse me while I still flail over in the corner like the ginormous fangirl I am. I saw it twice. Yesterday. Just yesterday. I'm seeing it once more next week, and I honestly could see again after that. Especially since I didn't pay the first two times, lol.

I meant to make this post last night after my back-to-back viewings, but I got caught up leveling my shiny new FFXI character, and was tired by the time I got home.

Something to understand about me. I've been a Star Trek fan since before I was born, i.e. it's in my blood, since my mom's been a huge fan since forever. I was never outspoken about it, I'm not one of those Trekkie's that's like "OMG THEY'RE DOIN IT WRONG CUZ..." or whatever. Basically, I didn't publicize my love of Star Trek because I'm mildly embarrassed by it. That and it's said you can't be a Star Trek fan and still be a Star Wars fan, and I am. But I'm shouting from the rooftops now.

I've been to conventions. Probably a dozen. Granted, I was a lot younger and don't remember them well, but my mom did give me the option to stay home and I chose not to. I met William Shatner when I was 4, at probably one of his last con appearances. I don't remember anything about it, but I have the picture. I remember seeing George Takei twice and being impressed by how deep his voice was when he said the trademark "OH MY." The memory that stands out most is of Jimmy Doohan, though, a few years before he stopped going to cons and then died not long after. He said the word "funky" then stopped and said "I sure hope I put an 'n' in that word, right?" And as a child who was told not to swear, that made my day.

Anyway. Leonard Nimoy was the only member of TOS that I never got to meet, and I'm sad. Because he fucking rocks. As does this movie. So anyway, enough about me. I'm gonna go on and on about how awesome this movie is now.

To get this out of the way, the only thing I really don't like about this movie is this whole new Star Trek universe they've created as an alternate universe, like how the one we know practically every detail about exists and this movie creates a whole new one. And the fact that there are two Spocks in it, and one universe is missing a Spock now. Blasphemy, lol. I think it's a brilliant way to explain away any continuity errors, but still. It's confusing.

At first I wasn't too fond of the whole Spock/Uhura thing either, simply because there was no hint of it in TOS, although the whole "alternate universe" thing can explain that away. But it was very well played and didn't take the focus off the story, so I kinda think I ship it now. Plus it was neat finally hearing her first name spoken on screen.

Things the inner geek within reveled in:
  • The tribble next to Scotty when they first meet him!
  • Greg Grunberg as the voice of Kirk's stepdad. I didn't even notice until viewing 2, lol.
  • The bartender suggesting a Slusho to Uhura in Iowa! (Slusho is a JJ Abrhams thing, from Alias to the codename for Cloverfield)
  • The light flairs and flashes of light over the face of the captain in his chair, a trait of TOS.
  • Karl Urban. That man IS a young Dee Kelley in that movie I swear. He's a self admitted ubertrekkie, but he must've studied Dee Kelley like no other. He IS Bones. From the "I'm a doctor not a physicist" to the "green blooded hobgoblin" to pretty much any exchange between him and Spock.
  • The EYEBROW. And Spock's "fascinating" when he sits in his future!self's chair. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to separate Sylar from ZQ, but other than the scene when he attacks Kirk, he WAS Spock. As if I didn't love Zachary Quinto enough.
  • The Kobyashi Maru. Really, the reason Kirk has always had this "so badass" rep is because he's the only person to pass the test. I'm so glad they weaved that into the basis of the story.
  • Sulu's sword. I WANT ONE.
  • Simon Pegg as Scotty. "I'm givin' her all she's got!"
  • Leonard Nimoy. I need not say more. Although his age is finally starting to show, and that made me sad. But I'm so glad he agreed to do this movie, even if he and Bill are cantankerous old men now. lol.
  • Spock meeting Spock. "Since my customary parting would seem self-serving" lol. I love the little bits of Spock's sense of humor that pop out in this movie.
  • And the end. How else do you end a Star Trek movie other than "Space. The Final Frontier." It had to be there for the movie to be worth it for me (and Orion. He perked up like a kid in a candy store when that came on) and it was, and it is. And the fact that they worked in the original theme into the score as well.
  • In memory of Gene and Majel Barrett Roddenberry. Fade to black.
  • *flail* So basically I could list the whole movie here. I really think I could. I love the dialogue, I love the "cooler than an Apple store" look of the bridge, I love how they made the characters so incredibly THEM, all the while creating this whole 'nother world for them to play in, I love all the geeky references for those of us who would get them, and I love that the movie is watchable and hugely enjoyable to people who won't get those references as well.
  • And the biggest thing? I love that JJ Abrahms did what he said he wanted, and revived a franchise with the idea of HOPE, instead of despair like the new Bonds and Batman movies.

I'm seeing it again once more. I'm sure I'll have more flailing to do then.

This Chris Pine fellow.

I know he was in Princess Diaries 2, but I don't think I'll rewatch it again just for him, bleh. BUT HES SO AMAZING. One, his eyes are like the prettiest shade of blue. Two, he can act. Three, he can act like a cocky, younger James T Kirk who had some of the best lines of dialogue in the movie. Four, did I mention he's PRETTY. I've already run off and joined like 4 LJ comms because of this movie. Sigh.

And now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna run off and watch The Wrath of Khan now, to revel in the best days of Kirk and Spock's friendship.

I need a better icon and I'm looking for a header. But right now this icon'll do.
